Never do these when using a fire door

The building fire code has made a number of provisions for fire doors and other means of escape, and in order for a fire door in use to be fully functional, the following things you should never do them.

1. Do not lock the fire door

Fire doors are not usually equipped with locks with anti-theft features, but are only guaranteed to be able to be closed and locked from the outside. Using a key to unlock the door can be very dangerous when an emergency, firstly because most people will not have a key and secondly because it will delay valuable escape time. Even if some fire doors can be locked, this is not recommended. It is best to leave escape locks and handle locks in a state where they can be unlocked at any time.

2. Do not Wedge the fire door

In order for a fire door to stop fire and smoke in the event of a fire, it should be kept normally closed. Fire doors are usually equipped with a door closer to ensure that the door closes automatically. Doors should not be blocked by any objects for ease of access. In particular, stuffing objects in the doorway or at the bottom of the door can cause damage to the hinges and door closer, and in the long term can make the door difficult or impossible to close.

3. Do not add or cancel any hardware by yourself

Fire doors used in public places are usually certified to the local fire or building codes of each country and region (e.g. UL 1784 and ANSI/UL 10C in the USA), which means that if you replace the parts yourself, you will need to choose parts that are certified to the same standards. Replacing fittings yourself may also result in the loss of the manufacturer's warranty policy. There are many fittings that require holes to be cut out for installation, which destroys the structure of the door itself, and without professional involvement is likely to result in a defective fire resistance. The same goes for deleting hardware.
